Sciatica Treatment And The Alexander Technique: Finding The Best Solution For Sufferers

Posted on Wednesday, June 23, 2010 in Back Pain Relief

Sciatica treatment is usually given to people who have been bending in the wrong place with poor posture for many years. In this article, you will learn about different habits that can stress the spine, and how you can get rid of sciatica simply by changing the way that you use your body.

The shooting pain known as sciatica happens when the sciatic nerve has pressure applied to it. This usually happens when an intervertebral disc becomes prolapsed, known as a slipped disc. When the discs bulge, they often create pressure on the sciatic nerve where it exits from the spine. This is usually experienced as a numbness in the buttock stretching down the leg and sometimes all the way to the foot.

Finding the root cause of sciatica it is the most effective way to understand, and treat the problem in the long term. Thus it is necessary to understand how a disc becomes prolapsed in the first place. For the most part, prolapsed discs happen from years of moving,  and bending in the wrong way. Whilst doctors don’t usually address this root cause, Alexander technique teacher’s specialise in it and they have an unbeaten track record in dealing with sciatica that cannot be shifted easily.

The Alexander technique was founded over a century ago, however up until recent years it had very little scientific study conducted on it, so there wasn’t much to back it up. In 2008, the British medical Journal published a study on the Alexander technique which concluded that it was a cost-effective solution to solving back pain, this also applies to sciatica..

In an Alexander technique lesson you can expect no brutal manipulation of joints, but gentle movements that guides the body towards less stressful postures in order to release muscle tension. Usually, the people who suffer the most from back pain have some ingrained postural habits that have developed over many years and have ended up manifesting themselves as physical damage. To reverse these habits, and retain our natural healthy posture, the student has to take a certain amount of responsibility to make this happen. In this way the Alexander technique has more similarities with teaching primary school children mathematics than in the traditional Western approach to treating illness which is to prescribe medicine to patients.

To become liberated from the pain of sciatica does take a bit of time and the willingness to change, but it is by no means rocket science. It doesn’t entail any strange stretches or using any strange contraptions, it is really just applied common sense. For example, a lot of people who see themselves walking in the reflection of shop window are surprised at how their posture is so bad. This surprise is caused because the way that we feel in our bodies doesn’t match up to the image that we see in our reflection. The originator of the Alexander principle, FM Alexander, called this faulty sensory perception.

To get a practical of feeling for faulty sensory perception, all you have to do is fold your arms. Then without thinking about it just fold them the other way. Nine times out of ten, people say that folding your arms the other way feels wrong, but they can’t say why it feels wrong. The truth is that we never fold their arms in any other way so we have an ingrained habit. In a similar way, everyone’s posture at whether right or wrong feels normal to the individual. Often times when Alexander teacher corrects posture,  the student will say it feels wrong, like their leaning backwards. However, their reflection in the mirror will confirm that their posture is actually totally different to what they may think.

In the case of sciatica, the everyday habits that are causing the pressure on sciatic nerve feel right to the sufferer, yet they are the exact thing that is causing them so much pain.Making the connection between a postural habit and the pain of statica is a crucial first step towards freeing yourself of pain forever.

Now, the chances are that as you have been going through this text you will have been pulling your shoulders back to try and correct your rounded shoulders. Nice try. Unfortunately, you have just been partaking in some tug of war between your muscles. What I mean by this is that when you pull your shoulders back you are effectively tensing up one muscle in order to compensate for a different tensed muscle that is in opposition. The result is that after five minutes your muscles become tired and you will revert back to your original slumped posture.

At in order to solve this problem thoroughly, you need not to increase the amount of tension in your body, but to actually reduce the excess tension you had originally. And this is precisely what an Alexander technique lesson can help you to do.

Why Do We Get Sciatica?
The cause is normally made by the compression of nerves in the back. It is this compression that causes all the problems and can sometimes involve compression of the sciatic nerve itself. This compression can then lead to inflammation and irritation and cause sciatica herniated disc problems. Pseudo sciatica is normally referred pain from damage to the facet joints in the lower back and is related to soft tissue tension in the muscles. Pregnancy can also cause problems resulting from the uterus pushing down on the sciatic nerve and the muscle tension from carrying the extra weight. These may come across as a bit silly but you must be aware of what job or living habits you do daily.

Sciatica Treatment and Cures For Sciatic Pain
There is a specific case called ‘Lumbar Disc Herniation’. For this specific case 9/10 this will resolve itself. Each of the following treatments will be different for each of the different symptoms as so will be the results that they generate. For immediate relief you can get anti-inflammatory medications or paracetamol. If the pain is really bad, it may be a good idea to go for a mri scan for sciatica. In the most severe cases the use of narcotics will be used to help control the pain.

In my opinion the most reliable and easy to implement therapy is having a stretching routine that has been proven to work on hundreds of cases. This is a good method for the very reason that it has been tested on hundreds of people to find out exactly what works. Stretching is great because it is better not to just use pain killers that don’t last and it is also better not to have to result in surgery. If your problems still persist you can always get seen by a specialist. This is more expensive however a good chiropractor for sciatica can be well worth the money.
